At a turbulent time when England was under increasingly severe Viking attack, the examples of these saints modeled.

    This volume is conceived as a complement to another Middle English Texts series text, Sherry Reames' "Middle English Legends of Women Saints." This selection "is intended to be broadly representative of saints' lives in Middle English and of the classic types of hagiographic legend as these were presented to the lay public and less-literate. The Vercelli Book and Exeter Book contain four long narrative poems of saints' lives, or hagiography. In Vercelli are Andreas and Elene and in Exeter are Guthlac and Juliana. Andreas is 1, lines long and is the closest of the surviving Old English poems to Beowulf in style and tone.
